The city of Bielefeld sits on the slopes of the Teutoburg Forest and separates the two main slopes. In the middle of this medieval city sits the Sparrenburg castle. This is considered the landmark of Bielefeld with its thirty seven metre high tower and catacombs that are open to the public. The city has two churches that date back to the thirteenth century. The first is Altstädter Nicolaikirche and is the oldest and is a Gothic Hall church with its most precious treasure being an altar from Antwerp. The second is the Neustädter Marienkirche, a slightly later Gothic church with a valuable winged altar. It is noted as the city to be bombed by the largest conventional bomb during the Second World War.
